Furlong Family Scholarship Fund

Furlong Scholarship has been established in memory of James and Nonie Furlong by their loving daughter, Kathryn Furlong.  There are two scholarships available each year for students from the City of Corner Brook who wish to further their education at an accredited university or college.

James Furlong, Kathryn’s father, was born in Furlong’s Cove, NL now known as Cook’s Brook in September 1901.  He was one of 5 children.  When his father died unexpectedly, James and his brother were forced to leave school to work to support their mother and siblings.  He was only able to complete a grade 6 education.  Despite this, James made a very successful living in the fishing and forestry industries until his later years when he also spent time in the real estate business.  James continued to be active in his community until his death at age 93.  Kathryn remembers him as a man who had incredible determination and drive to succeed no matter what obstacles were placed in his path.

Honorah Costello, Kathryn’s mother, was born in November 1903 in Conception Harbour, NL.  Always known as Nonie, at age 2 she moved to Wood’s Island until she was ready for high school.  She returned to the St. John’s area where she successfully completed her high school studies.  Nonie met James in 1934 and they were married in Oct 1935.  They welcomed their daughter Kathryn into the world in December 1936.  Nonie was a dedicated wife and mother her entire life and despite some rather significant health challenges that eventually took her life in Sept 1980, she remained a tireless homemaker and supporter of her family.  Nonie was a huge proponent of higher education and encouraged her daughter Kathryn to pursue a post secondary education during a time when many daughters were not given such an opportunity.

Kathryn Furlong, was born in Corner Brook in December 1936 and called Corner Brook her home until her death in 2022.  Upon returning from St. Francis Xavier University, she worked for the CNIB for five years and then started her career with the City of Corner Brook.  Her first duties with the city were those of a secretary but in a very short time she had earned a promotion to the position of City Clerk, a position she faithfully executed for over 30 years until her retirement.  Kathryn was a very strong supporter of the City of Corner Brook and the potential she had always seen in its citizens.  For this reason, she elected to establish this scholarship in memory of her father’s determination to succeed no matter the challenges and in memory of her mother’s steadfast belief that a key component of success was access to knowledge through higher education.  It is the hope of the Furlong Scholarship that the successful recipients of the scholarship will use their education to enrich their own lives and lives of those around them whether it be in Corner Brook or elsewhere in the world.

The Jamieson Family Memorial Scholarship

In 2017, the Jamieson Family Memorial Scholarship was launched (www.jamiesonfamilyscholarship.ca) with the goal of raising just over $42,000.

During the launch, Joshua Jamieson spoke of why he wanted to do this. Check out the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C250XLrAPS8&t=7s) from launch day.

That ‘goal’ amount for the fund was determined because the dividend that would result from its investment would make it possible to disperse one $1,500 scholarship per year in infinite perpetuity. So, the scholarship project truly is a legacy initiative that will benefit many generations of new community leaders, communicators, and journalists for decades.

The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to any eligible student planning to undertake studies in the areas of political science, communications, or journalism at any accredited post-secondary institution in Canada.

To ensure the scholarship’s longevity, transparency, and sound management, the partnership with the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador was established and CFNL serves as the fund’s caretaker. This partnership also enables the ability to issue tax receipts for donations we receive.

Activities to raise the funds have included raffles, selling handcrafted items/greeting cards at local markets, and direct donations.

They also have an online ‘Scholarship Shop’ (https://squareup.com/store/m0xy-productions) where the entire proceeds of product sales support the scholarship.

Products include Joshua’s grandfather’s memoirs in partnership with Breakwater Books, his grandfather’s spoken word 1979 Christmas album which he had remastered and personally manufactured, and the recently launched line of Friendly Fudge.  He hand-makes seven kinds!

To date, through all these activities he has managed to raise about $7,500, so he’s 18% of the way there.

The Leonard and Doris Clarke Memorial Fund encourages the educational achievements, community service and sport participation of youth from Bell Island.  Established from a gift in the estate of Leonard and Doris Clarke, the fund will annually distribute $5,000 in scholarships and awards for 20 years to graduates from St. Michael’s Regional High School as selected by its scholarships and awards committee. The fund also supports the Town of Wabana’s children and youth programming and sports field maintenance.

Leonard and Doris Clarke moved to Bell Island shortly after they married and started Clarke and Clarke Ltd. This included opening a Home Hardware franchise in 1971, which is still in operation today.  Leonard and Doris were generous and kind individuals and community leaders who believed in the power of education to provide young people with opportunities and the benefits of participating in sports.  They supported and mentored many young people throughout their lives and wanted to continue that as part of their legacy.

The Michael (Mike) Schulz Memorial Fund was established to celebrate the life of our wonderful son, brother and friend, uncle, nephew, cousin, teacher and colleague.

The fund provides annual financial awards to graduating students at Baltimore School Complex in Ferryland and St. Kevin’s High School in the Goulds who have made a positive impact on learning and school life.

Mike touched countless lives during his time with us. And, his wish for an award to benefit students exemplifies not only the caring educator, but the mentor and advocate that Mike was for so many of his students.
