Who We Are

Building an enduring legacy to strengthen the quality of life in our province

The Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s (CFNL) vision is thriving Newfoundland and Labrador communities where everyone belongs. CFNL nourishes relationships, inspires giving and connects resources to strengthen Newfoundland and Labrador communities, now and for the future.

Established in 2001, CFNL stewards more than $2.5 million in philanthropic investment for the benefit of the province. We’re part of Community Foundations of Canada (CFC), the national network for Canada’s 200+ community foundations that, combined, holds $7 billion in resources and reaches 90 percent of the country’s geography.

Our work takes place in three areas:

  1. Donor Services – Flexible and tailored stewardship of funds for individuals, corporations and charities. Learn more about starting a fund with the Giving Guide

  2. Granting – Making grants from funds stewarded by CFNL and through granting partnerships with corporations and government.

  3. Community Leadership – Connecting diverse people, ideas and resources through initiatives like NL Vital Signs and participating in a wide array of local, regional and national conversations about the community sector and generosity in Newfoundland and Labrador.

You can learn more about the positive difference the CFNL Community makes in the province by reading these stories or our annual reports to the community.

Our Values

In everything we do, we’re guided by:

  • Collaboration – Strengthening the spirit of working in community is at the heart of how we work. We believe everyone has gifts to give and a need to receive. We foster meaningful connections between people, ideas and resources, counting on the magic that happens when a community works together on something it cares deeply about.
  • Kindness – We operate with open minds, hands and hearts. We strive to be generous, candid and respectful with ourselves and others.
  • Wisdom—We value our insight and knowledge and aim to use them responsibly. We earn this knowledge by being committed to curiosity and humility.  We embrace diverse perspectives, voices and experiences.
  • Integrity—We aim to act honestly and authentically and choose courage over comfort. We are trustworthy, transparent and accountable.
  • Hope —We dwell in the possibility of Newfoundland and Labrador and the people who care about it.
