Nathan Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund
Nathan Walter Miller filled his 14 years with such passion and love in each, and everything he
did it reached far beyond school. His time was spent with family and friends hunting, fishing,
biking, snowmobiling, travelling and playing hockey.
Nathan loved to learn, but he wasn’t always eager to do the classwork. Every day he still showed
up and was determined to participate in discussions and learn. Any new skill acquired, he would
be excited to share the knowledge with someone else. Nathan cherished every connection he
made in life. There were always stories to tell in class and at home.
The connections and his enthusiasm to help others learn and experience life to its fullest is the
reason The Nathan Miller Scholarship Fund has been created. He didn’t always excel in
everything he set out to accomplish, but in every aspect of his 14 years he always brought
determination, humour, energy, and kindness. To award the recipient who demonstrates these
qualities will allow Nathan to continue connecting with others through learning.

His enthusiasm, calm manner and endless patience, along with his trademark sense of humour, were instrumental in the creation of the film and television industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. He was also a passionate voice for independent production on a national level, helping to ensure that Canadian stories are brought to the screen. The Paul Pope Legacy Fund has been established to honour Paul’s many contributions. Its purpose is to support individuals, groups or organizations based in Newfoundland and Labrador that advance the causes and interests that Paul advocated for during his life, particularly in the fields of film, television, theatre and the arts community of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ross Leslie Memorial Award
Ross Leslie was a true lover of the arts and of Newfoundland. He first came here as the Production Manager for Republic of Doyle in 2010 and fell in love with everything we have to offer. Nature inside the city, excellent restaurants, and the vibrant arts community made for an excellent quality of life for him when he was here for work.
He had a company called, ‘Trinculo Productions’. Trinculo is a character from Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. Ross, it turns out, had started his career as an actor and had travelled all over eastern Canada (including Labrador!) as a Tour Manager/Actor with Geordie Productions. Along came family and with its obligations, so he moved into film and quickly moved up the ranks to Production Manager/Line Producer. But he never lost his love of theatre or of performance.
In his time here he was an avid theatre goer and supporter. If you check the programs of many shows over the years, you will see Trinculo Productions and/or Ross Leslie thanked.
But his love of the arts didn’t stop there. He was an avid art collector who attended openings regularly and filled his home with painting after painting.
His love of the arts, and of this community, didn’t even stop there! He also supported short films, album launches, comedy nights, and bought and read countless books by local artists. He did all this all with joy, generosity, and ease. Ross was an inspiration! His love of this community made us all appreciate it more too. He was a foundation of this arts community, and we still feel the impact he left after his 8 years here.
To honour him and his contributions to so many, we have created a $500 cash award through the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, which will be managed by ArtsNL. The award will span visual art, theatre, and film/tv and will be decided by ArtsNL peer assessment committees when assessing professional project grant applications.
The award will move in a cycle, yearly between film, theatre, and visual art. Each year the peer assessment committee will select an artist who demonstrates excellence and passion in their own practice, and who also have a view of the arts and community that is broad, inclusive, generous, and supportive. The recipient will be someone who clearly supports the journey and practice of other artists; who finds joy in other’s work, and in other disciplines; and who demonstrates a view that is community minded.

Tara Bryan Legacy Fund

When Tara Bryan (1953-2020) relocated from the United States in 1992 to make Newfoundland her home, she found the perfect place to flourish as an artist.
A key, beloved figure in the arts community of this province, Tara had a prolific and far-reaching career. Her works, both in paint and on page, instill a sense of wonder in the viewer. She challenged us to observe—whether experiencing a story as it unfolded or looking closely at a landscape alive with light and colour. Although celebrated locally for her landscape paintings and imagery of icebergs, she was also fundamental to the book arts community both locally and internationally. She was known for her original, inventive handmade artists’ books, many of which were letterpress-printed and bound in her own printshop: walking bird press. Tara was a generous collaborator, often printing works with many other artists and writers. She was, in her own words, “inspired by the process of collaboration and the unexpected outcome of working closely with other artists.” She was also a lifelong arts advocate and educator, with a remarkable teaching style that left an indelible mark on many.
Tara Bryan passed away in September 2020. She will long be remembered not only for her impressive achievements in art, but also for her compassion, wit, intellect, and verve. The Tara Bryan Legacy Fund celebrates her memory by expanding and supporting Book Arts and Visual Arts in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Wayne Francis Memorial Scholarship Fund

The “Wayne Francis Memorial Scholarship” honours the life of Wayne Francis. Born and raised in Burin, Newfoundland and Labrador, Wayne excelled as a student and as a multisport athlete. He won many championships and awards, including Provincial High School Male Athlete of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador and MVP of the Atlantic Canadian Soccer Championship. In 2024, Wayne was inducted into the Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame. Most importantly to Wayne, he made life-long friends and memories as a Berney Breaker, Burin Eagle, Marystown Mariner, and captain of the Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games Soccer Team.
After graduating from Father Berney Memorial High School, Wayne attended St. Francis Xavier University as an Oland Scholar. There he was team captain of the varsity soccer X-Men and recognized nationally as a Canadian all-star. Wayne earned distinction as an Academic All-Canadian for his performance on the field and in the classroom. Wayne pursued law school as a Lord Beaverbrook Scholar at the University of New Brunswick. He finished his varsity soccer career as an Atlantic Canadian all-star at UNB.
Wayne was a partner at Ritch, Williams & Richards in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he specialized in insurance litigation. He died in December 2024 at the age of 47, nearly a year after a cancer diagnosis. Wayne’s wish was to establish a scholarship fund to support students with strong ties to the Burin Peninsula pursuing academics and athletics at the post-secondary level.
