Vital Signs
CFNL is committed to creating and sharing meaningful community knowledge about the province that helps to guide our work and provides valuable insight to others who care about the well-being of communities across the province.
Our largest community knowledge initiative is NL Vital Signs. CFNL also undertakes other more focused community knowledge projects, like this 2025 report on community housing in NL – Breaking the Bottleneck: Catalysts for Expansion in NL’s Community Housing Sector.
NL Vital Signs
Vital Signs is a community check-up conducted by community foundations across Canada that measures the vitality of communities and identifies significant trends in a range of areas critical to quality of life. Vital Signs is coordinated nationally by Community Foundations of Canada.
For the last 10 years, NL Vital Signs has been a partnership between the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Harris Centre at Memorial University, providing a check-up on the quality of life in Newfoundland and Labrador communities. Recent budget cuts at Memorial University resulted in the elimination of the Harris Centre’s operating budget. This will shift what NL Vital Signs looks like in the future. We are so grateful for the immense time, care and expertise that Harris Centre staff put into NL Vital Signs to make it the high-quality and meaningful report it is known for by community leaders across the province and beyond. You can stay tuned to CFNL’s website and social media to learn more about what’s next.
