A Story of Kindness from Bonavista | Nominated by SaltWater Community Association
Betty’s story reflects the ways people look out for each other across Newfoundland and Labrador. Kindness like this happens every day. Sharing it sparks more of it.
When the Best Kind Giving team showed up at Betty’s door, she had no idea they were coming. Her first words, after the surprise: “I didn’t do it for this.”Then she offered something to anyone watching: “Anybody out there, I want you to understand: when you’re doing something for someone else, it always comes back in some form. It may not come today, but it’ll come sometime, like today for me.”
For years, Betty has been making the Bonavista Peninsula feel like home, volunteering with SaltWater, serving as Mayor and pitching in across the community. Through Best Kind Giving, Betty is getting a hand with a few things of her own, and now she’s inviting others to do the same. That spirit, neighbours looking out for neighbours, is what makes work like this possible, like building a safe place for families who need one.
Your support helps this community work continue on the Bonavista Peninsula. Share your kindness by donating to help complete a 3-bedroom transition unit in this region. Domestic and intimate partner violence is a growing concern in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.
The finish line is in sight, but reaching it takes community support.
Your donation today will help complete this much-needed transition unit for a family fleeing domestic violence. Every dollar brings the doors closer to opening and puts safety, hope, and a fresh start within reach for a family when they are needed most.
With your help, a safe place will be waiting for a family on the Bonavista Peninsula when they need one.
As a registered charity, the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador retains authority over the gifts we receive and uses our own judgment in granting them. This is in line with CRA’s guidance on grants to non-qualified donees (which includes non-profit organizations not registered as a charity).
This project advances important charitable activities in this community, aligns with CFNL’s charitable purposes, and SaltWater Community Association has the experience and community relationships to lead the initiative. Learn more about the project here.
