A Story of Kindness from Bell Island | Nominated by the Town of Wabana

Bell Island is full of people who get things done. Roseann and Doris are two shining examples.

Roseann Grant is the backbone of St. Michael’s Hall. She’s a retired teacher and a board member of the Bell Island Heritage Society, and for decades she has cooked meals for hundreds, decorated for weddings and birthdays, and carried 40-pound turkeys home from the store herself.

Doris Bennett has spent the past 20+ years with Tourism Bell Island, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 and the 50+ Club. She was also the driving force behind the island’s Veterans Banners.

Best Kind Giving was glad to help them both make the switch from oil to heat pumps. Thanks to Heat Pump Solutions for making that support go even further.

Support Bell Island’s Veterans Memorial Park

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 is raising money for a Veterans Memorial Park beside the Legion. It will be a permanent place to remember those who served in the First and Second World Wars, when Newfoundland was its own Dominion, and those who have served as Canadian soldiers since. Your gift brings them one step closer.

Another Story of Kindness from Marystown | Nominated by Smallwood Crescent Community Centre

Giving back isn’t something Edna does. It’s who she is.

Through the Lions Club, Edna has been organizing bingo nights, fundraisers, and community events across the Burin Peninsula for years. She never seeks recognition. Right now, she’s focused on caring for a family member through a serious illness, making trips back and forth to St. John’s and managing the costs that come with it — and she’s still finding time to give back. Best Kind Giving is proud to help with a new heat pump and some support for the road.

A Story of Kindness from Marystown | Nominated by Smallwood Crescent Community Centre

Two people. 60 years of community service. And they had no idea what was coming.

Ronald Saint helped found the Smallwood Crescent Community Centre in 1987. Nearly 40 years later, he’s still there — organizing meals, running activities, and quietly checking in on his neighbours. Cynthia Broders has been on the board for more than 20 years, giving everything she has even while managing her own health challenges and caring for family.

Best Kind Giving was honoured to show up for both of them.

A Story of Kindness from Bishop’s Falls | Nominated by the Town of Bishop’s Falls

Everett Pelley has spent a lifetime showing up for people. At 85, he hasn’t stopped.

For decades, Mr. Pelley has looked after his community. As an electrician, he never turned anyone away. He ran the Breakfast Program at Helen Tulk Elementary, was named Bishop’s Falls Citizen of the Year, and today he still walks into local seniors’ homes every week with music, a familiar face, and a few blueberry cakes.

Best Kind Giving, together with Exploits Home Hardware, is proud to help with some repairs to his home.

Be a part of the kindness that powers the Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program at Helen Tulk Elementary

The Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program at Helen Tulk Elementary runs on community support, just like Mr. Pelley’s. Local volunteers make sure kids in Bishop’s Falls start their day with a good meal, and your donation helps keep that going.

A Story of Kindness from Grand Falls-Windsor | Nominated by Lionel Kelland Hospice

Marit and John, Eddie Sheer, NorthPine Foundation and the team from Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls-Windsor

Marit has always felt that she gets more from volunteering than she gives. For her and her husband, John, community service has just been a part of who they are.

Since joining the Lionel Kelland Hospice as a volunteer in 2025, Marit has volunteered more than 250 hours. She also started Nellbelle Earrings, handcrafting earrings and donating every dollar raised to Lionel Kelland Hospice.

Her husband John has been right alongside her. Two veterans, making their home and giving back to their community. Now Best Kind Giving is giving them a hand with some home renovations of their own.

A Story of Kindness from Bonavista | Nominated by SaltWater Community Association

Betty and Eddie Sheer talking about how her story reflects the ways people look out or each other in the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador

Betty’s story reflects the ways people look out for each other across Newfoundland and Labrador. Kindness like this happens every day. Sharing it sparks more of it.

When the Best Kind Giving team showed up at Betty’s door, she had no idea they were coming. Her first words, after the surprise: “I didn’t do it for this.”Then she offered something to anyone watching: “Anybody out there, I want you to understand: when you’re doing something for someone else, it always comes back in some form. It may not come today, but it’ll come sometime, like today for me.”

For years, Betty has been making the Bonavista Peninsula feel like home, volunteering with SaltWater, serving as Mayor and pitching in across the community. Through Best Kind Giving, Betty is getting a hand with a few things of her own, and now she’s inviting others to do the same. That spirit, neighbours looking out for neighbours, is what makes work like this possible, like building a safe place for families who need one.

Your support helps this community work continue on the Bonavista Peninsula. Share your kindness by donating to help complete a 3-bedroom transition unit in this region. Domestic and intimate partner violence is a growing concern in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

The finish line is in sight, but reaching it takes community support.

Your donation today will help complete this much-needed transition unit for a family fleeing domestic violence. Every dollar brings the doors closer to opening and puts safety, hope, and a fresh start within reach for a family when they are needed most.

With your help, a safe place will be waiting for a family on the Bonavista Peninsula when they need one.
