Before the Ballot: Leadership Fund

The “Before the Ballot: Leadership Fund” was established by Equal Voice Newfoundland and Labrador, Breakwater Books, and Memorial Press to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote and hold public office in Newfoundland (now Newfoundland and Labrador).
On April 3, 1925, women across the province cast their ballots for the first time, marking a historic step toward political inclusion. Over the past century, women and gender-diverse individuals have made significant contributions to political life. However, systemic barriers related to gender, race, socioeconomic status, ability, and other intersecting factors continue to hinder the full participation of these groups in leadership roles. In tribute to those who fought for political rights, this fund will support women and gender-diverse individuals facing systemic barriers in pursuing leadership development opportunities. By doing so, the fund aims to break down these barriers and make political engagement more accessible, ensuring that saying “yes” to politics is a possibility for all.
